Off Sweden’s southeastern coast lies the popular island of Öland. Borgholm, in central Öland, offers a combination of town, forest, alvar plains, a castle, and the sea. As early as the 19th century, Borgholm became popular as a spa and seaside resort; the Öland air was considered especially beneficial, attracting guests from all over Sweden. Since then, it has remained a well-visited summer town, with activities throughout the season, such as the celebration of Crown Princess Victoria’s birthday on July 14. Since 2000, the cultivated landscape has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, recognized as one of the world’s most unique places.
