South West Zealand is known for its long coastlines ideal for fishermen and windsurfers, and for swimming, of course. In the region you find cosy towns as e.g. Korsør, Skælskør and Slagelse as well as a lot of historic castles and manors.
The nature of South West Zealand is highly influenced by the sea. All along the Great Belt you can find a lot of good beaches, e.g. at Jammerland Bugt and Musholm Bugt (bays) as well as the impressive Stillinge Strand, a wide beach with dunes and fine sand. The beach also offers a view of the exceptional Great Belt Bridge which is the longest suspension bridge in Europe. Beside the good beaches the area also has large woods, especially near the town of Sorø. In the northern part of the region you find Tissø, Denmark's fourth largest lake. The lake is an important resting area for water birds and therefore a well-visited area for bird watchers.
Slagelse is the most important shopping town of South West Zealand with cosy pedestrian zones and shopping centres. The town also has one of the largest military barracks in Denmark and every Wednesday you can watch the horse guards riding through the town. South of Slagelse you find Skælskør surrounded by the beautiful Skælskør fiord where you have the opportunity to sail the fiord. But the town also has one of Denmark's most idyllic town environments with half-timbered houses and cobblestones.
In the southern part of the region you find a number of interesting castles and manors, all within short distance of each other. Start e.g. by driving to Espe Gods (estate) ca. 8 kilometres north of Skælskør. The estate offers a spectacular view of the Great Belt. From here you can go to Borreby Gods (estate) a few kilometres south of Skælskør, one of Denmark's oldest and best kept renaissance castles built in 1556. Continue ca. 16 kilometres east to Holsteinborg Slot (castle) at the village Bisserup. The castle was one of the places the world known author H. C. Andersen often visited. Another ca. 30 kilometres east from this you will find Gavnø Slot (castle) near Næstved. The castle is surrounded by a beautiful park.

Zealand is Denmark's largest island and has something to
offer for
every taste. In addition to housing Copenhagen, the capital
of Denmark,
Zealand has incredibly beautiful scenery that varies
between large forests, hilly
landscapes and fantastic bathing beaches. In addition, the
island has
numerous cosy market towns with historic buildings and
many castles, mansions and fortifications that can be
visited.
• In Odsherred in northwestern Zealand, the focus is on the
sheer diversity
of scenery in this area. Here, in the west you'll find hilly
landscapes
facing the Samsø Belt, fantastic sandy beaches with large, sandy dunes to the north out to Hesselø Bay, and lush
fjord landscapes in the east towards Isefjord. And on top of
all this, it is also where you'll find
Zealand's largest moor at Havnsø at the lower end of Nekselø
Bay. Search under holiday homes in
Roervig,
Roenaes
and Veddinge bakker, which are some of the well-known holiday home areas. At
DanCenter
Holiday Home Rentals, we're here to help you find
the perfect holiday home for your holiday.
• In Northeast Zealand, you'll find Denmark's capital,
Copenhagen.
This city has more sights and attractions to see than you
can possibly cram into one holiday! Both north and south of
Copenhagen, there are large holiday home areas situated
close to good
bathing beaches, in
Gilleleje and Raageleje in North Zealand. So you can combine your holiday in a
holiday home with a city break in Copenhagen. In Northeast
Zealand,
you can also visit one of the many royal castles and
fortresses that were
built throughout the ages by Danish kings, including
Kronborg Castle in Helsingør (or Elsinore in English), the
setting for Shakespeare's play,
Hamlet.
• In South West Zealand, there are many nice cosy towns you
can visit
such as Slagelse and Skælskør. In Skælskør, you can
take a lovely trip on the fjord by boat, and in the town
centre, you can see
some of Denmark's most idyllic, historic buildings with
half-timbered houses and inner courtyards paved with
cobblestones. In Slagelse,
you can go shopping in the city's pleasant pedestrian
streets and
shopping malls. In South West Zealand, you can also enjoy
visiting one of the many
historic castles, country estates or fortifications that
dot the countryside.
Good beaches along the coast
There are good beaches to be found all over Zealand. The
most
well-known of them lie out to the Kattegat in North Zealand,
like those
at Hornbæk, Gilleleje and Liseleje. On Zealand's west and
the east coasts, where the water is more calm, most of the
good
beaches are to be found along the bays. These include the
beaches in Køge Bugt and Faxe Bugt
on the east coast, and those in Sejerø Bugt and Musholm Bugt
on
the west coast.
