Bohus-Malmön, the Island of Granite!

Bohus-Malmön is a place where Bohuslän shows its most beautiful side. Here, you will encounter the legendary reddish-pink granite, sparkling bays, and a sea that shifts between calm silver and powerful blue. The island is made to be explored—on foot, by bike, or from a kayak gliding along dramatic cliff walls. The island has been inhabited since as early as the 16th century and is one of Bohuslän’s oldest fishing villages.

Wander through the historic quarry and follow the traces of the proud stonemason heritage, or find one of the many sun-warmed swimming coves where the cliffs form natural sun loungers. There is something for everyone, from sandy beaches to rocky baths. The beaches Pärlane and Kattesand are among the most popular. In the evening, the sun sets behind the horizon in a spectacular display of colors that has made the island famous.

The island was historically one of the most important places for Bohus granite. Loads of processed stone were shipped all over the world. Quarrying ceased in the 1970s, but the quarries and several stone artifacts can still be seen across the island. Especially on the west side of the island, the old quarries are visible.
