Funen is to find in the very centre of Denmark and is the second largest island in the country. The landscape is hilly and undulating with a lot of orchards and living fences and the characteristic half-timbered farmhouses.

From Funen you can go to the Island of Sealand by a bridge called Great Belt Bridge (Storebæltbroen) or to Jutland by the Little Belt Bridge (Lillebæltsbroen). In the Archipelago of South Funen ferries of different sizes are the contact to the surrounding world.

Along the coast of Great Belt, on the northern and southern part of Funen and in the southern part of Little Belt there are some very fine, sandy beaches with calm water. In the Little Belt the current might be rather strong, so it is a good idea to follow the local instructions on this matter. Also the Archipelago of South Funen offers great swimming/bathing possibilities, and as the distances are short, it is always possible to find a nice, sheltered beach.

In Funen the biggest city is Odense. It is the third biggest city of Denmark, and it was here that Hans Christian Andersen, the world famous Danish poet, grew up. In the old part of Odense you can still see how this city looked at the time of H.C. Andersen, and it is also possible to visit his childhood home.

South of Funen you will find the two islands called Langeland and Ærø, both of them part of the Archipelago of Funen. Langeland can be reached both by ferry and by a bridge (Langelandsbroen) while Ærø can only be reached by ferry.
